Lochcarron - about Lochcarron and things to do and see

Ashaig beach with the Applecross hills in the distance

Staying in Lochcarron will give you an ideal base to tour Wester Ross. You could take a journey from this pretty village, via Gairloch which has superb beaches and also golf course, to another attractive village, the little fishing port of Ullapool.

You could take a drive over the Bealach na Ba (Pass of the Cattle), one of the highest roads in Britain which climbs from sea level to 2,053 feet. This is a truly spectacular road and once conquered you end up in the charming village of Applecross. Here you will find pretty walks, stunning beaches (you must walk up Gillie Gillie!) and I think Applecross is one of the friendliest villages around! Stop in at the Inn for great food and company. Applecross has superb views across the Inner Sound to Raasay and Skye.

The pretty village of Plockton is nearby

The Torridon Hills always attracts walkers and climbers, but even if you do not climb, they are worth a visiting just admire their beauty. Torridon also has the Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve.

A visit to Plockton is a must. Plockton is another idyllic little village, made famous for being the location of the TV series Hamish MacBeth. You will find some excellent eating places in Plockton.

Another place to explore is Kintail and Glenelg, with its Pictish brochs. The Glenelg Inn is worth a visit too - It is a very quaint little place! From Glenelg you can go down the track leading to Sandaig, the former home of Gavin Maxwell, author of Ring of Bright Water. Gavin Maxwell's final home is on Eilean Ban - which you can see when you go over the Skye bridge.

The Cuillin mountains on Skye

Mountains are one of the predominant features of the Wester Ross landscape. They are put into two categories, Munros or Corbetts. Munros are the highest with peaks of over 3,000 feet and Wester Ross as no less than 40 Munros including, Liathach, Beinn Alligin, Beinn Eighe, Slioch and An Teallach.

The Corbetts mountains are between 2,500 and 2,999 feet, 32 of these can be found in Wester Ross. These include Fuar Tholl, Sgurr a'Chaorachain, Beinn Dearg, Beinn Lair and Sail Mhor.

For the less energetic - walking in Wester Ross offers the most interesting walking areas in Scotland. We have many routes from Glen Carron, starting from Tullich, Coulags and Achnashellach. Walking not only gives you some good exercise and fresh air, but also excellent scenery and the likelyhood of spotting our local wildlife. Deer, pine martens, golden eagles and maybe an otter or two!

Other places of interest include Attadale Garden, near Lochcarron, containing exotic plants and an attractive Water Garden. The National Trust has 5 properties in the area. Strome Castle is near Lochcarron. There is also the Smith Heritage Centre at Lochcarron, the Applecross Heritage Centre, the Gairloch Heritage Museum and the Ullapool Museum and Visitor Centre.
